State Coal Mine

State Coal Mine

Wonthaggi

The State Coal Mine precinct in Wonthaggi has two open-space areas capable of hosting events. The larger of the two is in the north-eastern corner and is a flat grassy lawn with a gently sloping hill at the
southern end.

Visitors can enjoy lunch or light refreshments in the café or make use of the sheltered picnic area and free
barbecues. There are timber picnic tables with bench seating at the barbecue area.

About 60 vehicles can park between the main tourism centre and ‘The Shed’ which is a small theatre. This car park has marked disabled parking spaces. Overflow parking is available along State Coalmine Access
Road.

The large lawn is lit up at night by two high powered lights attached to nearby buildings. The second area has no lighting. The areas outlined here have yet to be used for any major events.

The State Coal Mine is the only historic coal mine experience in the Southern Hemisphere and offers a journey back in time to discover what life working in a coal mine was like in the 1900s. Visitors can venture underground through the dark network of tunnels to get handson at the coal face and learn
how Victoria’s hard-working men extracted the black gold.
